A new crisis has arisen in the cannabis industry: Hop Latent Viroid (HLVd). HLVd is a tiny infectious agent made up only of genetic material (RNA) and does not have a protective protein coating. Unlike viruses and other pathogens, HLVd primarily spreads through mechanical means, such as unsterilized cutting tools and equipment. HLVd has been found in most regions of the world and has impacted cannabis plants in the United States. Symptoms of HLVd infection include stunted growth, brittle stems, leaf malformation, and reduced flower mass. However, plants may not show any symptoms initially, making it difficult to detect the infection just by looking at it. The most reliable way to determine if HLVd is spreading is through regular screening using PCR or other molecular nucleic acid amplification tests.

To combat the threat of HLVd, TUMI Genomics has created a test to detect HLVd infection in cannabis/hemp plants. The test uses a triplex taqman qRT-PCR to detect the presence of HLVd RNA sequences. The test targets two separate regions in the HLVd genome and an endogenous plant transcript, which acts as a positive control. This approach reduces the chance of false positive results and confirms that the test is working properly. TUMI Genomics uses a proprietary method for nucleic acid extraction, which provides results in 24-36 hours.

TUMI Genomics conducted several tests to validate the accuracy and reliability of their HLVd assay. The test was able to detect HLVd at a concentration of 7.5 viroid copies per reaction. The cross-reactivity analysis showed that the test only detects HLVd and not other pathogens. The inclusivity analysis showed that the test can detect 98% of known HLVd variants. Finally, the clinical/comparative validation showed a positive predictive value of 100% and a negative predictive value of 92%.

TUMI Genomics HLVd qRT-PCR assay is a valuable tool for growers and producers in the fight against HLVd infection in the cannabis industry.

TUMI Genomics’ Comprehensive Testing Services for Cannabis Cultivators

TUMI Genomics offers in-lab testing services, where growers can take samples and send them to the company for analysis. The company also has plans to develop an onsite testing platform that will allow growers to test their own facilities with a sensitivity level similar to PCR (polymerase chain reaction) and the ability to handle high-throughput testing. Tassa stated, “We’re also developing an onsite testing platform that we’re hoping will come out sometime [this year] that will allow people to do a lot of these tests onsite. What we’re most excited about is that this platform has a sensitivity very similar to PCR and it can be high throughput, so it should provide a lot of options for people to get onsite information accurately.”

Revolutionizing HLVd Testing with TUMI Genomics’ Onsite Platform

The onsite testing platform is expected to revolutionize the cannabis industry by reducing the cost of testing by 30 to 40% and providing more accurate results faster. With the ability to test onsite, growers will be able to detect HLVd sooner and take action to save their crops before it’s too late. Hector added, “I think growers will be able to do a lot more testing because it will be a lot more affordable. So there is a, there is a reducing the pricing of testing by probably 30 to 40%. So you can drive the cost down of the test with a similar level of accuracy and sensitivity and then you will be able to do it on site, which is important. Because then you don’t have to be sending samples to a lab and taking a week before you can get your results. A week is important. Whenever you run is five weeks. So the sooner you can identify you have a problem, the sooner you can start ripping up plants and start growing mothers from, from zero, and then, and try to control the problem in your facility.”

TUMI Genomics: Educating the Industry on HLVd in Cannabis Cultivation

TUMI Genomics is also committed to educating the industry about HLVd and providing real science-based information to help growers mitigate the impact of this destructive pathogen.
